FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What types of whales will I see?
Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are the most commonly sighted whales around this area. They average 16m long and weigh about 40 tonnes each. Southern Right whales (Eubalaena australis) are also spotted from time to time. Sperm whales, Killer Whales, Minki whales and Blue whales may also be seen, but very rarely. For the first half of the season, the whales are travelling on their North migration, then around September/August, they begin their migration back down south.
What if I don't see whales?
Whales are guaranteed, so on the small chance if you don't see any whales on your tour, please contact us on your return so we can reschedule your next tour. Unfortunately we cannot give refunds instead of re-ride trips.
Will I get wet?
It depends on the vessel you choose. The action packed ride on board the high speed vessels offers a chance of getting wet, while the larger vessels will generally keep you dry. Those on board the high speed tours will have the option to use a waterproof jacket on the day.
Can I bring my camera?
Cameras are welcome on board, but are done so at your own risk. Water proof cameras are highly recommended if you are on board a high speed boat, as spray from the ocean can easily damage your equipment. Spending your journey behind the lens of a camera isn’t strongly recommended either, as it takes away from the powerful experience happening in front of you and it also increases the potential of sea sickness.
Is there a place to leave my belongings while on board?
On the adventure vessels there is a small spot underneath each seat to store a bag, but please keep your gear limited. All other vessels are large enough for larger bags, but still please bring a minimal amount.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is no problem if you are on one of the larger vessels, as there are roofs over the viewing decks, offering warmish and dry viewing. All other tour types will generally be rescheduled, as rain can dampen your excitement levels.
What about motion sickness, will it be rough?
We will be in the Pacific Ocean, but the type of vessel you choose makes a big difference. They key point to look at is the width to height ratio. The taller the boat, the more it will rock back and forth. The high speed tour boats are the best suited vessels for avoiding sea sickness, as you are in the fresh air all the time, and these types of boats have less rocking motion in them. If you have never been offshore on a vessel before, we strongly recommend that you consult a chemist the day before your tour to purchase some sea sickness tablets to be taken before you travel.
Are there toilets on board?
The larger vessels have toilets on board, however the adventure vessels do not.
Is morning or afternoon better?
Whale activity is constant, 24hrs a day, as they don't stop for morning tea or a lunch break. Ideal conditions are going to vary from day to day as some mornings can be windy and afternoons can be perfect. The exact opposite is also just as likely. It will depend more on your schedule and preference.
What happens if it is bad weather?
On the morning of your booking, the operator of the vessel you are booked on will call you if they need to cancel the tour due to poor weather. If this is the case, we will be happy to reschedule you to another day, within this season. If you are unavailable to re ride on another day, we can process a refund for you.
What if I miss the departure time of the boat?
Unfortunately we will not be able to give you a re-ride voucher or give you a refund. We recommend all passengers arrive at their departure point 15 minutes prior to departure time.
